Executive Summary

The wheel loader is a mainstay for many types of construction projects. Wheel loaders are used to lift and load just about any type of material found on a job site—construction materials, asphalt, demolition debris, gravel, rock, sand, wood chips, to mention a few—onto another type of machinery. The machine’s applications extend beyond construction, as it is also used in agriculture, mining, landscaping, and snow removal. The diversity of applications reflects the range of horsepower and bucket sizes: Low power models, 80 horsepower or less, are considered compact machines, while higher power models, greater than 80 and up to 2,000 horsepower, are considered standard machines. Bucket sizes range from 1 - 20 cubic yards. Small and mid-sized models are often equipped with attachments such as grapples and forks for specific applications. Thus, wheel loaders are well-suited to work in an extensive range of construction and some non-construction settings.
