There are currently 25 trencher manufacturers. In prior analyses we discussed that trenchers fall into two categories: pedestrian (walk-behind) and ride-on trenchers, which are self-propelled crawler or wheeled machine designs and incorporate a chain-type of excavating mechanism or a wheel-type excavating device with small buckets.

Pedestrian models are produced by 13 manufacturers, seven of whom make only walk-behind “mini” (push/pull) trenchers. The remaining six companies include self-propelled walk-behind models to complete their line of offerings. Generally walk-behind models have engines rated less than 20 horsepower and use a wheel not a chain for excavating the trenching site.
