This report examines the mini-excavator market in North America and is an update to our last report of July 2003. There are approximately 23 mini-excavator suppliers in North America, with Bobcat being the only North American producer. Mini-excavators are compact excavators rated up to six metric tons and have seen demand steadily increase over the past few years as more and more work sites have come to appreciate the functionality and flexibility these machines offer. The top three companies accounted for about 56 percent of the market in 2004. As mentioned, sales of mini-excavators have continued at high levels, increasing 33 percent in 2003 over 2002 and another 40 percent from 2003 to 2004. We forecast sales will continue to rise in 2005 and 2006, although perhaps more modestly compared to the past few years.
