One huge aspect in today’s forestry equipment market is the widespread consolidation occurring amongst the equipment suppliers. The major alliances began with John Deere’s acquisition of Timberjack in late 1999. Then Caterpillar signed a worldwide marketing and supply agreement with Blount International. Most recently, Komatsu entered the forestry equipment arena when the company acquired Partek Forestry, manufacturer of Valmet and Timbco forestry equipment.
In addition to the consolidation that has taken place, demand for lumber products has surged in recent years as the housing markets in the United States, as well as other global regions, have been growing at an incredible rate due to lowered interest rates and emerging development abroad. In turn, the pricing of wood products has gained much needed strength, which subsequently has had a positive effect on sales and production levels of wheeled forestry equipment in North America.
