JCB is the world’s largest privately-owned manufacturer of construction equipment,
and one of the top nine companies in the world. The company employs more than
5,000 people at 13 factories on four continents, with annual sales estimated at £--
billion in 2004. It sells a full range of equipment in over 150 different countries. The
company is based in the United Kingdom with additional manufacturing facilities in the
United States, India and South America. The company is in the process of adding
facilities in China, as well. Most of its manufacturing operations are in the United
Kingdom, and it exports 75 percent of its UK-made products to 140 countries. JCB is
widely known in the European market for its backhoes, some people even referring to
backhoes as “JCBs”. Approximately 20 percent of consolidated JCB sales are in the
North American market.
