Hydraulic excavators are key products in all types of construction and building
applications making this machinery one of the most important products sold in the
North American market. We estimate that the 2006 wholesale value of this market in
sales from manufacturer to dealer was approximately $x.75 billion. There are
currently 26 hydraulic excavator suppliers in North America offering more than 300
models. Half of these suppliers offer both wheeled and tracked (crawler) models,
while the others offer only crawler type models.
The crawler excavator market dwarfs the wheeled market considerably as these
machines are used in a large array of applications, whereas wheeled excavators are
generally used in highway and other road building projects. Among the large number
of suppliers in the crawler excavator market, there are three giants that command a
large portion of the sales activity from year to year. In 2006, Caterpillar, Deere and
Komatsu captured nearly xx percent of the market with combined sales leaving the remaining xx percent of the market to be divided amongst the other 23 suppliers.
