Located in Peoria, Illinois, Caterpillar is the largest global supplier of construction and
mining equipment in the world and generates about half of its sales in markets outside
of North America. The company is also one of the leading suppliers of diesel and
natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. Cat Financial is a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc. and provides financing alternatives for Caterpillar’s full line
of equipment. The company also extends loans to customers and dealers.
The company acquired about 20 manufacturers and formed a number of joint ventures
in the mid 1990s. Since then it has continued to make acquisitions and has remained
focused on its core mission. For example, Caterpillar currently operates 10 facilities,
both joint ventures and wholly owned businesses, and employs approximately 2,000
people in China and distributes its products through five independent Caterpillar
dealers in that country.
