It is fair to say that although little changes in the asphalt paver industry, nothing tends to stay the same either. As the basic function of dragging aggregate material from the hopper to the screed, striking it off and compacting it has not changed much in 50 years, today’s paver manufacturers are constantly faced with the challenge of adapting to everything from engine emission standards to advances in material handling systems.
Yengst Associates has divided the market into two categories of pavers based on operating weight: Commercial Class (<19,000 lbs.) and Highway Class (>19,000 lbs.). As one might expect, highway class machines are primarily used for roadways, large parking lots and other types of major paving projects. Commercial class pavers, on the other hand, are suited more for smaller applications, such as driveways, golf cart paths, footpaths and the like.
