This report is an update to our Wheel Loaders report published in 2007. Since our last report, the construction equipment market has taken a severe downward swing due to the bursting of the domestic housing bubble and ensuing financial and economic downturn that is currently affecting most nations around the world. In this report, two categories of wheel loaders are covered including compact (under 80hp) and standard sized (over 80hp) loaders. The size of the compact wheel loader market pales in comparison to its standard sized counterpart with the over 80hp size class outnumbering the compact units in sales by a ratio of nearly 9:1. The compact market is gaining in popularity, yet it is still considered a ‘niche’ market and proves to have a stronger presence in European countries.

The current wheel loader market is comprised of roughly two dozen suppliers ranging from the well known giants such as Caterpillar, Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, and Case to the smaller, lesser recognizable suppliers that include a slowly rising number of Chinese players these days. The five largest OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) suppliers just mentioned made up more than 80 percent of North American sales in 2008. In this report, the current environment for the wheel loader market in North America is examined. Forecasted figures will be included to help show when we expect to see a rebound in growth and overall improvement in domestic sales and production activity.
