This report updates our last analysis of wheel loaders from September, 2013. Wheel loaders are one of the most commonly-used earthmoving types of construction equipment. The magnitude of the range in horsepower in these machines gives an indication of their wide diversity of uses. The least powerful machines, around 20-25 horsepower, can be found in landscaping and gardening operations. On the other hand, the heaviest machines range over 2,000 horsepower and are found in large-scale mining projects. Other common applications include multiple types of construction, highway and street maintenance, and industrial and utility applications. There is also a variety of less common applications, such as crop and dairy agriculture. This wide variety of applications has helped the wheel loader market recover to former sales levels after plummeting more than 40 percent in two years when the economic slowdown began in 2008.
