Hydraulic excavators, with operating weight of more than six metric tons (13,200 lbs), rank among the most essential pieces of equipment sold in the North American market. There are approximately 28 suppliers of hydraulic excavators to the North American market. These companies compete in two complementary product segments: Crawler excavators and wheeled excavators. Crawler excavators account for approximately 96 percent of all sales. With the exception of Badger, all of the OEMs covered in this report offer crawler excavators to the North American market.

In all, there are more than 325 different excavator models on the market in North America. This report covers excavators weighing more than six metric tons (13,200 pounds) in size and does not include machines weighing less than six metric tons (“mini-excavators”). Excavators have several different end uses: Earthmoving, material handling, mining, demolition and forestry.
