This report covers the North American farm and industrial tractor market and updates our last report dated May 2007. It includes an overview of historic, current, and forecasted sales and production levels for the North American tractor market. It also provides other related information such as component usage, field population, import/export activity and evolving trends in today’s farm tractors.

The agricultural industry has been very fortunate so far in the current economic calamity. Most manufacturers of agricultural equipment were able to maintain slightly increased revenues on the agricultural side during 2008 relative to record high levels in 2007. Total 2008 North American tractor unit sales were down except for the 100+ horsepower and four-wheel-drive tractor categories both of which increased more than 20 percent. The farm and industrial tractor market is truly a global marketplace. This has never been more evident than in 2008 when exploding commodity prices for seed and feed stock caused civil protest in the Pacific region and elsewhere. The high prices made food unaffordable for many people and in some cases entire nations. Fortunately the commodity bubble burst and prices have fallen, to high levels but nothing like they were in the summer of 2008. The drop in commodity prices however, hurt the American farmer because demand for ethanol crops fell just at the time of harvest along with the moderation of energy prices. This over supply helped push down prices negatively affecting the farmers’ income.
