The crawler dozer is a staple of construction sites and is one piece of off-highway equipment that is readily recognized by children and adults alike. It continues to be in demand because there isn’t any other machine that can replace it. Unit sales in 2005 and 2006 were virtually flat and at peak levels from 1988 and dropped precipitously in 2007. We anticipate that unit sales will fall again from 2008 through 2010 given the state of the world’s economy. We estimate that the crawler dozer field population, with a 20 year useful life, increased two percent since our last report. Demand for crawler loaders also peaked in 2005 and has dropped steadily since then.

Crawler loaders
are also readily identifiable however, we anticipate sales to decline through 2010 when they should grow once again. We do not expect, however, that crawler loader sales will recover enough to reach 2005 levels for many years, if ever. This is because crawler loaders can be substituted by other equipment depending on the application. All crawler loaders are produced outside of North America, while we estimate that 38 percent of crawler dozers sold are imported.
