CURRENT MODELS AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Compactors play an essential role in a wide range of construction projects. They are used in the process of laying base materials as well as rolling asphalt surfaces ranging from streets, highways and airport runways to walkways, driveways and parking lots. These machines include dual- and single-drum vibratory models, as well as pneumatic-tired, combination (steel drum and pneumatic-tired) and static (steel-drum) rollers. The reader should note that this Equipment Analysis covers only self-propelled compactors and does not include hand-held and walk-behind machines. The definition of a compactor varies by individual as well as by manufacturer. The generally accepted definition refers to rollers as asphalt machines and compactors as soil machines. However, for the purpose of this report, the terms are used interchangeably and the production and consumption numbers include equipment that addresses both soil and asphalt applications. Not included in the production and consumption figures for this analysis are landfill, embankment and trench compactors. This report is an update to our December 2008 report.
