This report examines the asphalt paver market in North America and is an update to our September 2006 report. Asphalt pavers are broken down into two different classes: Commercial and highway. Some OEMs differentiate the classes by auger width, but at Yengst Associates and for the purposes of this report, we classify commercial-class machines as asphalt pavers ranging from 0<19,000 pounds operating weight and highway-class machines as pavers >19,000 pounds. As the name suggests, highway-class machines are primarily used for roadways, large parking lots and other types of major paving projects.

Commercial-class pavers are typically found in use for smaller projects, such as driveways and paved walkways. One of the trends occurring in the asphalt pavers market is that commercial pavers are becoming larger than 19,000 pounds, being “up-sized”, and highway pavers are becoming “down-sized” with the difference between the two being screed widths.
