This report examines the Aerial Work Platform market in North America and updates our April 2008 report. The North American aerial work platform market is highly dependent on the equipment rental industry because most AWPs are sold to or through rental houses. The AWP machinery market once had many suppliers but over the last several years there has been consolidation among the bigger players while some smaller OEMs have dropped out of the market all together. For example, in July 2008, Bil-Jax was acquired by Haulotte Group of France.

Terex Genie
, JLG and Skyjack, combined, had 97 percent of total North American sales in 2009. Several smaller manufacturers still remain in the AWP marketplace, but for the most part they supply equipment to niche applications and have been able to hold their own in 2009 for that reason. Industry sales of AWPs bottomed out in 2002, peaked in 2007 and plummeted to historic low levels in 2009. Sales of these machines are directly affected by the U.S. economy as they are employed largely in non- residential construction.
