Located in Peoria, Illinois, Caterpillar is the largest global supplier of construction and mining equipment in the world and generates about half of its sales in markets outside of North America. The company is also one of the leading suppliers of diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. Cat Financial, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., provides financing options for Caterpillar's full line of equipment, and extends loans to customers and dealers.

Caterpillar acquired about twenty manufacturers and formed a number of joint ventures in the mid 1990s. Caterpillar currently operates ten facilities, both joint ventures and wholly owned businesses.
